Does U-Haul Provide Drivers? No, but you can still get one

U-Haul rents the truck. Who drives it is up to you. If you want a U-Haul with a driver, you rent the truck yourself and bring in a separate driver: a friend you add to the contract, or a professional driver service.

The short answer: No. U-Haul does not provide drivers, and its Moving Help crews are not permitted to drive your truck; they load and unload only. Penske, Budget and Enterprise don’t provide drivers for moving trucks either. To get your U-Haul driven for you, rent it in your name and hire a professional driver who is added as an authorized driver. Driver prices typically run $600 to $2,500 depending on distance.

What U-Haul Provides, and What It Doesn’t

U-Haul is an equipment rental company. Its business is renting trucks, trailers and towing equipment to people who move themselves. Everything it offers is built around one assumption: you, or someone you authorize, will drive.

U-Haul offersU-Haul does not offer
Moving trucks from cargo vans to 26-foot trucksA driver for any of those trucks
Auto transports, tow dollies and trailersSomeone to tow your car for you
Moving Help: independent labor to pack, load and unloadMoving Help crews who drive the truck
U-Box portable containersFull-service moving (packing, driving and delivery by one crew)
Boxes, pads, dollies and suppliesLong-distance transport of your belongings in a U-Haul you rented

U-Haul does let you authorize other drivers on your rental, free of charge. That is the door that lets a friend, or a professional, drive the truck you rented. See can someone else drive my rental truck for the rules at each company.

Do U-Haul Movers Drive the Truck?

No. When people search for “U-Haul movers,” they usually land on Moving Help, U-Haul’s marketplace of independent, labor-only crews. U-Haul is explicit that those helpers do not drive your rental truck. Driving is not permitted under the Moving Help arrangement; the helpers load at your old home, you drive, and a crew unloads at the new one.

That makes Moving Help a good partner for a driver service, not a replacement for one. Many of our customers book Moving Help to load, a professional driver for the drive, and Moving Help again to unload.

U-Haul rents trucks. Moving Help loads them. A driver service drives them. If you want all three jobs off your plate without paying full-service mover prices, you need all three.

Why Truck Rental Companies Don’t Supply Drivers

Supplying drivers would turn an equipment rental company into a transportation company. It would need a nationwide workforce of vetted drivers, dispatch and scheduling, return travel for every one-way trip, and the liability that comes with operating customers’ moves. Self-service is the whole model: it is why one-way rental trucks are affordable.

So the rental companies stay out of it, and independent driver services fill the gap. You keep the low cost and control of a truck you rent yourself, and someone experienced does the driving.

Do Penske, Budget or Enterprise Provide Drivers?

No. None of the consumer truck rental companies supply a driver with a moving truck. All of them allow additional authorized drivers, which is how a hired driver gets behind the wheel.

How to Get a U-Haul With a Driver: Your Options

Since you can’t rent a U-Haul with a driver in one booking, here are the realistic ways to have someone else drive.

1. Hire a professional driver

You rent and load the U-Haul. A vetted, licensed and insured driver is added to your contract and drives it to your new home while you fly or drive your car. Typically $600 to $2,500.

2. Add a friend or family member

Free to add at U-Haul. Works for shorter moves with someone comfortable in a large truck. You cover their travel, and the renter carries the risk.

3. Hire a full-service mover

The mover packs, loads, drives and unloads in its own truck. The most hands-off, and usually the most expensive, with delivery windows of one to three weeks.

4. Use a portable container

You load a U-Box or similar container and the company moves it. Slower and less predictable on delivery dates, but nobody drives a truck.

For most long-distance moves, the first option keeps what people like about renting a truck, the price and the control, and removes the part they dread. If you want the full step-by-step on that option, read can I hire someone to drive my U-Haul. If you are renting from another brand, see how truck rental with a driver works with Penske, Budget and Enterprise.

How Hiring a Driver for Your U-Haul Works

  1. Request a quote. Tell us your pickup and delivery addresses, date, truck size and whether you are towing a car. Quotes come back the same day.
  2. Rent the U-Haul in your name. You keep the rental agreement and choose U-Haul’s protection plan. Our driver is added as an authorized driver, which U-Haul allows free of charge, and can pick up the truck for you.
  3. Load it your way. Pack and load yourself, or book Moving Help for the heavy lifting.
  4. We drive it. Your driver inspects the truck, checks any car-trailer hookup and tie-downs, and drives straight to your new address. Our office tracks the truck and keeps you updated.
  5. You meet the truck. Most trips are delivered in one to three days depending on distance. Unload on your schedule.

Our drivers are background-checked, licensed and insured, with at least five years of box-truck experience. We drive only: we don’t pack, load or unload, and we don’t carry passengers.

What Does a Driver for Your U-Haul Cost?

A professional driver typically costs $600 to $2,500, depending mainly on distance. Truck size, towing a car and timing also affect the price. You pay U-Haul for the truck rental separately, and fuel and tolls are paid at cost.

Which Option Fits Your Move?

  • Moving long-distance, and the drive is the hard part: rent a U-Haul and hire a driver. Compare one-way rentals first in our long-distance moving truck rental guide.
  • Towing a car behind a 20- or 26-foot truck: a professional driver. See U-Haul with a car trailer.
  • Short move, experienced friend available: add them to the contract for free.
  • You can’t pack or load at all and budget isn’t the constraint: a full-service mover.
  • Not sure what size truck to rent: start with the U-Haul truck size guide.
